There’s a metaphor, “turning on a dime” that describes one of the ways that we adjust to unexpected changes of conditions. A dime is a very small detail. And it is the small details that can cause us to pivot. Buddhism teaches that causes and conditions fashion our ordinary life of the self. This teaching is so clear when our plans have to change to accommodate reality. The teachings are always found in the way that ordinary life actually functions. Causes and conditions. We aspire to respond to these with wisdom and caring. A momentary shift of some small detail and we have to recast our plans. We realize right away that our plans don’t accord with what’s actually happening. So we turn on a dime and re-arrange the schedule.
This is what’s happened with our plan to have sesshin next week. Because of my having Covid, we’ve postponed spring sesshin. It’s now scheduled for March 29-April 2. All things work together. This change of dates may allow some of you to attend that weren’t able to at the original time. May it be so. And please, everyone, take good care of yourself. Pay attention. Taking good care of the self is part of taking good care of sangha.
