The heart of living according to Buddha’s teachings is guided by the Buddhist Precepts for a Healthy Life. They are both ordinary and profound, and are reliable guides for  the myriad choices of how to speak and act each day. There is no end to these precepts as we emerge into the vast complexity of all our relations.
The first step in this direction is to receive the Five Foundational precepts. They are the supporting structure for the spiritual life. This ceremony will be offered in October for anyone who has completed the Tuesday night classes that begin September 7, 2021.
These precepts are the supporting structure for the spiritual life. Without embodying and honoring them the spiritual life is beset with difficulties and obstacles. Surmounting these arises naturally when our best efforts align with the precepts. If everyone kept them the world would be at peace.
They are:
I vow not to kill, but to cherish all life.
I vow not to steal, but to respect the belongings of others.
I vow not to misuse sexual energy, but to be honest and respectful.
I vow not to lie, but to speak truthfully.
I vow to refrain from intoxication and keep the mind clear.
We don’t receive precepts only after we are able to keep them, but in order to keep them, in order to maintain our intention to cultivate them as the basis for our conduct. Truly, it is a continual practice, as it is almost impossible to keep them perfectly. We are committing to do our best, through them, to live in a wise. mindful and peaceable way, a way that is natural and inherent for an awake life.
