An out-of-season dandelion puff brought to mind how anywhere I am, and everything around me, expresses the dharma. The very form of the puff is an analog of impermanence, interdependence and no-self. This puff functions so beautifully to load the seeds for the next generation in such a way that the breeze, when it comes along, can scatter them in every direction. Some of these seeds take root.
So also the teachings come to us from every direction and from all of time and some of us are fertile soil. And some of us scatter the seeds of awakening by how we live. The seeds root in the soil, and this soil is continually replenished by everything that lives and dies here.
Earth’s surface rich in the vitality and decay of many forms of life. So are you and I, emerging from the generations in this biome that have produced us, our bodies, our minds, our purposes, all bringing us to this minute, reading this. All work together to bring forth our unique life for our brief span. Every moment we incarnate together with all of the material forms and energies that cooperate to compose our own life. So, can you appreciate each moment as a koan that helps you to wake up, be wholly alive? In this way, may we all live a life of practice, never ending.
